Why I Write

The Why I Write essay was one of the more difficult assignemnts of the semester. There are so many directions I felt like I could have gone with it, and it was initially difficult to weave my ideas around a guiding principal. The paper went through two drafts before I was finally happy with the result.

I thought back to what I feel was one of my most formative experiences as a writer, interviewing my grandfather and writing a biography about his experience surviving the Holocaust. His story shaped mine, it was with that realization that I knew storytelling was at the crux of why I write. That idea permeates throughout all of my writing - whether it be an academic paper or an article for a magazine. But why is telling stories so important to me? I believe that human stories help us connect to issues, no matter how large or far away, and can spark social change.
